How to Avoid Short Weight When Buying Steel in Karachi
Short weight is the quiet way steel buyers lose money. Here's how it happens - and five simple checks to make sure you get the full weight you pay for.
If you buy steel by weight - and almost everyone does - the single biggest risk to your money isn’t the rate. It’s short weight: quietly receiving a few kilograms less than you paid for on every order.
It rarely looks like cheating. A little here, a little there, “estimated” weights, an old scale. But across a project of several tonnes, those missing kilos add up to real money out of your pocket.
Here’s how to protect yourself.
1. Insist on a public weighbridge
The gold standard is a public, calibrated weighbridge - the same kind trucks use. The reading is independent and visible. If a supplier only offers “estimated” or “chart” weights, you have no way to verify what you actually received.
At Taheri Enterprises, every order is weighed on a public weighbridge in front of you, and you keep the weighment slip. That’s the whole idea behind Full Weight, Full Value.
2. Get the weighment slip - and a photo
A printed weighment slip is your proof. Take a photo of it next to your loaded vehicle. If there’s ever a question later, the slip settles it.
3. Know the theoretical weight before you go
Steel weight is fixed physics. A 2×2×¼” MS angle is 1.447 kg per foot - always. Before you buy, calculate roughly what your order should weigh, so you can sanity-check the scale.
Use our free steel weight calculator - pick the section, size and length and it gives you the exact kilograms.
4. Watch the tare weight
For truck weighing, the empty (tare) weight matters as much as the loaded weight. Net steel weight = loaded − empty. Make sure both readings are taken properly and recorded on the slip.
5. Buy from a name that stakes its reputation on it
The best protection is a supplier whose whole business is built on honesty - one that wants you to watch the weighing. Ask directly: “Will you weigh it in front of me and give the slip?” The answer tells you everything.
The bottom line
You should pay for exactly the steel you receive - no more, no less. Demand a public weighbridge, keep the slip, and check against the theoretical weight.
