MS Angle Sizes & Weights - A Buyer's Guide
Everything you need to order MS angle right: common sizes, how to read a weight chart, how to calculate total weight, and what each size is used for.
MS angle (the L-shaped section) is the workhorse of everyday fabrication - grills, gates, frames, trusses and brackets. Ordering it is simple once you understand three things: size, thickness and weight.
How MS angle is described
An angle size has three numbers, for example 2 × 2 × ¼”:
- 2 × 2 → the two leg lengths in inches (equal-leg angle has both the same)
- ¼” → the thickness of the steel
A bigger leg or a thicker section means more steel - and more weight per foot.
Common MS angle sizes
We stock equal-leg MS angle from ¾ inch up to 8 inch, in thicknesses from ⅛” to ¾”. The most popular sizes for general work are:
| Size | Thickness | Kg / Ft |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × 1 | 1/8” | 0.362 |
| 1-1/2 × 1-1/2 | 3/16” | 0.812 |
| 2 × 2 | 1/4” | 1.447 |
| 2-1/2 × 2-1/2 | 1/4” | 1.833 |
| 3 × 3 | 3/8” | 3.257 |

How to calculate the weight
Section steel is sold by weight, and the formula is simple:
Total weight = Kg per foot × length (ft) × number of pieces
Example: you need 10 pieces of 2 × 2 × ¼” angle, each 20 ft long.
- Kg/ft = 1.447
- Per piece = 1.447 × 20 = 28.94 kg
- Total = 28.94 × 10 = 289.4 kg
Don’t want to do the maths? Our steel weight calculator does it instantly - just pick the size, length and quantity.
What each size is used for
- Small (¾”–1½”) → window grills, light frames, brackets
- Medium (2”–3”) → gates, trusses, racks, general fabrication
- Large (4”–8”) → structural frames, towers, heavy supports
